Huion Kamvas 13 Gen 3 Review

Introduction

Huion is one of the largest manufacturers of digitizing products for graphic designers and artists. They have a truly extensive lineup of tablets, displays and notebooks for digital content creation with over 30 models in various sizes. The Inspiroy family of products, including the Inspiroy Dials 2 reviewed here, features tablets that provide a drawing surface to follow on a separate screen. For a more connected experience, they offer the Kamvas family of Display Tablets that provide a screen with a drawable surface.

Huion Inspiroy Dial 2

One of their most recent compact display tablet is the Huion Kamvas 13 Gen 3, reviewed in this article. It is a 13" Full HD display with an anti-glare etched glass surface to draw on using an induction pen. As a third-generation model, it nearly matches the specifications of the Kamvas 13 Pro which offers a higher QHD+ resolution and a more sturdy design for more intense use. The screen measures 13 inches diagonally and has a standard 16:9 aspect-ratio to match the majority of modern computer monitors. This makes it easily portable to work at client sites or while traveling..

Pen Display tablets always come with a dedicated pen. The Kamvas 13 Gen 3 gets a 4th-generation PW600L with a resolution of 5080 LPI and ultra-fine pressure sensitivity that can distinguish 16,384 levels. It echoes tilt data ±60° and has a maximum positional accuracy of ±0.3mm. The pen has three operational buttons and replaceable nibs.

Extra on-tablet controls include dual dials, each with its down mode button, plus five programmable buttons. These set of controls can be completely customized using its dedicated driver. Huion provides the most comprehensive driver support of any manufacturer. The Kamvas 13 Gen 3 has drivers supporting Windows (7+), MacOS (10.12+), Android and Linux. Note that for an Android device to be compatible it must have a USB 3.1 Type-C port with at least DisplayPort 1.2 Alt-Mode. Computers can connect to the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 via HDMI or USB-C with DisplayPort 1.2 Alt-Mode. A special cable to connect via HDMI is provided, while USB-C connectivity requires an extra purchase.

The Huion Kamvas 13 Gen 3 is surprisingly affordable for a display pen tablet with a list price of $250 USD or $360 CAD. Check the Huion website for a lower price as they regularly have discounts.

Product Features

Many features from the Kamvas Pro lineup made their way into the third-generation Kamvas 13. Since some technology was developed for non-display tablets, the digitalization stack is a the fourth-generation PenTech 4.0. It combines of a high-precision sensor grid and induction pen that automatically aligns itself to the display surface regardless of the pen tilt angle. The newly designed PW600L pen has a very low activation force to draw effortlessly.

This Pen Display Tablet has an etched glass surface covering its 13" screen that mimics the micro-texture of paper, allowing the pen to glide over the surface without sliding away from the intended position. This surface is made of lamination layers that also give the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 a mat look which is very effective at cutting out glare. This is more crucial for display tablets than other devices since its working surface generally faces upwards which exposes it overhead lighting.

The built-in display a 13" IPS LCD screen with a standard 1920 x 1080 resolution that has a 16:9 aspect-ratio. The display panel itself provides 99% sRGB and Rec 709 color-gamut coverage. This is significantly better than the vast majority of laptop screens. In order to it to render the most accurate colors, the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 comes calibrated from the factory. Each product is shipped with a calibration certificate showing a Delta-E below 1.5 which is a high standard of color-accuracy. The screen has a 1000:1 contrast-ratio and a 200 nit brightness which are reasonable for using the pen display indoors.

Borders on all sides provide a way to hold this pen tablet without touching the display area. One of the two short sides packs 5 customizable buttons between two dials. At the center of each dial, there is a mode button that cycles over various dial configurations. An illuminated power button confirms whether the device is on or off. It vertically symmetric design allows using the tablet with controls on the left or right, according to user preference.

A Pen Display Tablet is more complex to interface with. Huion provides two options with the Kamvas 13 Gen 3:

  • One, included in box, is via HDMI plus USB. This will be the most common setup for most users since nearly every workstation, desktop and laptops powerful enough for manipulating images, feature at least one HDMI port. Since HDMI does not transmit power nor position info, the included cable features two additional USB Type-A connectors. One is used for communication and they other is used for power transmission. Both can plugged in to the computer, if it provides enough power to its USB Type-A ports. Otherwise that USB connector can be plugged into a power source directly or with the provided extension cable.
  • The other, which requires a USB-C cable with DP Alt Mode, is to use a single USB-C to USB-C cable. This must be attached directly to a USB Type-C port that supports DisplayPort 1.2 Alt-Mode. Often such ports are marked with a screen icon or the letter D. This is highly convenient when supported. In practice, this is mostly restricted to laptop and Android devices.

NOTE When selecting the connection, the USB C-to-C cable must be attached directly to both devices or via a USB Type-C extension that specifically supports DP Alt Mode. The triple cable is more versatile as it supports adapters and hubs for all three of its connectors. One workstation used for this review had no more available HDMI ports and see a Display-Port to HDMI adapter was used. Another laptop had no more free USB-C ports and so a USB Hub was used to provide the HDMI and both USB ports.

At 865g, the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 is relatively light and quite portable, given its size. This pen display tablet is optionally sold with a fordable stand that supports the display at various angles. This of course adds some weight to the product. The included pen offers three configurable buttons and does not require a battery. It gets powered by induction coils embedded in the tablet. The top of the pen has a soft plastic nib to make precise contact. These get used over time and so Huion provides 10 extra nibs inside a compact pen holder. A two-finger glove and cloth are provided to keep the surface of the tablet clean.

Kamvas 13 Gen 3 Review

Pen Display Tablets are devices that combine a display with a digitalizing surface driven by a specially-built pen. The fine tip of the pen used to controls tablets gives them great precision and allows them to record both pressure and tilt to provide a natural drawing experience. While the HDMI port provides a standard display interface, for other features to fully operate, a proprietary driver is required.

Installation & Configuration

Huion provides drivers for Windows, Linux, MacOS and even Android. While Android support requires specific capabilities, other drivers support most common modern operating systems. For this review, the official Kamvas 13 Gen 3 drivers were installed on Windows 11, Windows 10 and OpenSUSE 15.6. For Linux, they distribute Debian drivers and a broader installer in .xz format that can be used on other distributions.

Installing Kamvas 13 Gen 3 drivers is truly a breeze. On both Windows and Linux, installation was the smoothest of any tablet. On Windows, launching the installer only prompts for the user to accept Terms & Conditions. The Linux installer does not even do that. As all drivers, it must be executed as root. Installation takes a few seconds before requiring a reboot. Again, this normal for device driver.

NOTE On all platforms, the Huion driver sets itself to automatically startup upon logging in. This makes the tablet ready on every boot, yet occasional users should disable this in the Windows Startup Programs control panel settings. The Linux equivalent depends on the Window Manager in use.

Huion Driver Pen Configuration

Once the system has rebooted, the Huion Control Panel should be used to configure the tablet and pen. There are multiple screens with an intuitive layout showing every control. Users can click on each control to customize its behavior. The number of options presented is truly outstanding. Pen buttons can be assigned to mouse buttons with modifiers and virtually any combination of key presses. The one notable option that is not supported is to use a pen button as a modifier key alone.

There is a similar screen for tablet keys and dials. Each dial can be assigned up to 3 functions that get cycled using the corresponding central button. The tablet control screen also decides whether its surface area maps to itself as a display on its own or a replicated one. These are versatile options which are discussed further in the Usability section below. Back to the pen configuration, a second settings screen allows users to control how the pen responds to pressure.

Usability

Ergonomics of the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 can be split into two categories: the quality of its display and its response to pen input. The display itself measures a compact 13" diagonally, which is great for portability. That is counter-balanced with precision. For those artists who need more precision Huion offers the 16" Kamvas 16 Gen 3 with a higher QHD resolution. That larger model is based around the same technology and works the the same high-precision pen.

With a brightness of around 220 nit, the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 display is a little dim. However, it is greatly helped by an excellent laminated etched glass anti-glare layer that makes it completely matte. Even with overhead lighting, the screen remains free of reflections. The display has a 1000:1 contrast ratio which is appropriate for a graphic tablet. Higher contrast-ratio seen on some monitor causes banding and are much less representative of printed media that have far lower contrast.

The IPS panel for the display has a 60 Hz refresh rate and 25ms response time which are completely adequate for the task. Colors precision is 24-bits and cover the entire sRGB gamut with impressive accuracy. The 1920 x 1080 resolution maps well to the majority of modern displays. This display tablet accommodates duplicating a display with a different aspect-ratio by either distorting digitalizing surface to use the full area or letter-boxing to maintain shape correctness. A drop-down menu in the driver control panel lets user choose the behavior.

Drawing with the PW600L pen feels very natural. The pen glides over the tablet surface with little resistance, allowing for long even strokes to be captured uninterrupted. The position of the pen and pointer coincide within a faction of a millimeter, ±0.3mm according to official specifications when measured near the center of the display. There is minimally perceptible delay between pen movements and pointer position updates. The Kamvas 13 Gen 3 has a good response rate over 260 Point-Positions/Second (PPS).

In addition to position data, the pen reports its tilt-angle and the pressure applied. At 16384 levels, this pen is the most sensitive available which even exceeds the maximum of professional tablets. Pressure can be used to control how strokes are drawn. Exactly how strokes change under pressure is determined by the software being used. Tilt works similarly and seems to be finely granular, for subtle effects that can mimic how a pencil or other drawing tool responds. The exact effect of pen tilt is also controlled by the software in use.

There are three buttons on the pen, all within easy reach of the index finger or thumb. The lower two buttons are larger and the easiest to press. A smaller third button is located just above them. It is nice to have all three buttons close by, unlike others that feature one at the top of the pen, this requiring a complete shift of grip. Buttons all have a nice tactile response for the user to know when they are activated.

Extra controls on the pen display tablet itself are well though out. There are five buttons just far enough from the edge to avoid accidentally pressing one. Each button triggers a configurable action promptly. These are very useful to switch tools or toggle modes. There are also two dials that are extremely useful to adjusting settings within a range. This includes controlling zoom and brush size among a huge number of possibilities. These dials protrude slightly from the side for users to rotate them while holding onto the short edge of the tablet.

Just like a real paper notebook is often held at an angle for comfort, a tablet is more ergonomic when tilted. Some people simply rest the back of the tablet against the edge of their desk but using a dedicated stand provides more stability. Huion sells the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 with or without a stand. The optional ST300 stand is adjustable with six discrete tilt angles to choose from. It is feels sturdy and stable, as it rests on a solid edge. This stand folds flat for storage and transport.

Ergonomics of the Huion Kamvas 13 Gen 3 are truly impressive and exceed those of many more expensive professional pen display tablets! Its highly responsive and precise pen make using the tablet feel very natural. One can perceive a very short lag between pen and pointer motion which takes little time to get used to. The display shows accurate colors and uniform brightness, thanks to its effective anti-glare lamination.

Summary

The Huion Kamvas 13 Gen 3 exceeds expectations with its combination of display quality, ergonomics and responsiveness. Even though it is not part of the Pro lineup, this pen display tablet delivers a performance that is hard to fault. This is a compact 13" model that provides a very natural user experience and is quite portable. The Huion drivers are very solid and a breeze to install on a variety of systems, allowing users to get started quickly.

The display of the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 shows great color accuracy and a truly effective anti-glare surface that make it usable despite relatively low brightness. Having 1920 x 1080 resolution on a display with a 13" diagonal makes it sufficiently sharp for most users. With a choice of HDMI or USB-C with Alt Display Mode connectivity, this tablet connects to any computer or laptop. It even supports some Android devices.

Where the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 truly excels is in terms of ergonmics. The display lamination allows the included pen to glide effortlessly across the surface. Pen position, pressure and tilt are reported with outstanding accuracy and minimal lag. With 16,384 levels of pressure, this is one of the most sensitive induction pens on the market. It has 3 highly configurable buttons that can be easily reached plus replaceable nibs to extend its longevity after extended use.

Extra controls directly on the tablet are very convenient to establish an efficient workflow. All five buttons support an impressive list of functions to simulate mouse, keyboard or application events. Even more, dual dials make it possible to control parameters such as zoom and brush size without letting to go of the tablet. Huion made the tablet symmetric to equally support right and left handed users. This level of control exceeds most professional tablets as the dials are far more usable than typical scroll or touch areas. The only item that some users could miss is pass-through USB-C which can free one port on the host computer.

It is easy to be skeptical of a pen display tablet that is this affordable. However, during the review period, there was not a single moment when the Huion Kamvas 13 Gen 3 did not perform on par with high-end pen display tablets. Professional users may want to consider the Kamvas 16 Gen 3 is built around the same technology except with a larger 16" display with 2560x1440 QHD resolution. While the 13" model comes at a very afforable $265 USD or $360 CAD, the 16" version is sold for $500 USD or $700 CAD.
