Sony Launches Super-Telephoto GMaster Lenses

This morning, Sony unveiled two lightweight telephoto lenses under their premium G Master series. These newly announced super-telephoto prime lenses are the first in the series to be optimized for weight.

First up is the Sony FE 400mm F/4.5GM OSS. This prime lens provides Full-Frame coverage in a weatherproof body that weights just under a kilo. Given its moderate F/4.5 maximum aperture, this is exceptionally light for a lens that has an extremely long reach. Its GMaster status means it has been built to professional standards and is designed for delivering peak sharpness.

A 400mm lens, mounted on a Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera captures a 6.1° angle-of-view. It is ideal for sports, action and large wildlife photography. With a minimum focus-distance of 2.5m, it can achieve a maximum magnification of 0.18X. The front of the lens accepts huge 95mm screw-on filters. The Sony FE 400mm F/4.5GM OSS features optical image-stabilization of unspecified efficiency.

The second lens is the Sony FE 600mm F/6.3GM OSS. This extreme-telephoto prime lens is virtually the same as as its 400mm counterpart by restricting its maximum aperture to a dim F/6.3. The weight of this lens is also under a kilo. All characteristics and feature of this lens, save for the focal-length and aperture combination, match the 400mm F/4.5. This includes a weatherproof build and support for 95mm screw-on filters at the front. Capturing an angle-of-view of just 4.1° makes this one ideal for wildlife and bird photography.

Sony Electronics expect to ship these two lenses next month. The GMaster status of these lenses commands high prices, as one would expect. The Sony FE 400mm F/4.5GM OSS is launched for $2700 USD or $3600 CAD, while the Sony FE 600mm F/6.3 OSS is priced at $3700 USD or $5000 CAD. Follow these links for purchasing options.
