Sony Unveils 5th Generation RX10
News
2026.07.09
Sony just launched a new ultra-zoom, eight years after the last one and nine since its predecessor debuted. The new Sony RX10 V is a rare Premium Ultra-Zoom that boasts the most advanced capabilities of any fixed lens camera, taking many features and a physical design very similar to the professional A7-series of Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras, except the fourth control-dials surrounds the lens instead of being on the grip!
This ultra-zoom is built around a 20 Megapixels 1" Exmor RS Stacked CMOS sensor with built-in Phase-Detect AF and paired with an extremely impressive 24-600mm F/2.4-4 stabilized Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens. Only some ultra-zoom have a one inch sensor which gives this camera an immediate edge in terms of image-quality. Even though this focal-range is not uncommon among ultra-zooms, the extraordinary feature of this lens is its bright maximum aperture. A maximum F/4 aperture at 600mm is unique and quite a technological achievement.
This model packs a 575-Point Phase-Detect AF system that features AI trained subject recognition and tracking. The new Stacked CMOS sensor of the RX10 V allows this camera to shoot full-resolution images continuously at 30 FPS. This also makes it possible to record 4K video at 120 FPS. A builtin microphone records stereo audio. It can also record quad-channel 24-bit audio at 48 kHz using a digital microphone attached to its Multi-Interface Hot Shoe, exactly like most recent Alpha cameras.
Sony equipped the RX10 V with a wide range of features usually found on professional offerings. The most important is a large 3.6 Megapixels 0.5" EVF that shows 100% coverage at 0.78X magnification. There is also a 72mm filter-thread that accepts standard screw-on filters. Plus, this is one of the only weatherproof fixed lens digital cameras on the market. There is also a dedicated aperture-ring and focus-ring plus customizable buttons.
Lastly, along with all these features, the Sony RX10 V carries a professional-level price. At $2300 USD or $2900 CAD, this is the most expensive ultra-zoom ever. Sony plans to ship it next month. This is promising to become one of the most suitable digital cameras for travel photography. Its all-in-one weatherproof body provides great versatility. It can already be pre-ordered at Adorama or B&H Photo.
