Fujifilm Launches New 400mm Prime Lens

This morning, Fujifilm extended their XF series of lenses for X-mount APS-C Mirrorless Digital Cameras with a new super-telephoto prime lens. The new addition is the third longest Fujifilm lens, allowing a less dim maximum aperture that other native super-telephoto lenses.

The new Fujinon XF400mm F/4.5R LM OIS WR is prime lens that captures a 4.1° field-of-view with a moderately dim F/4.5 maximum aperture. On a Fujifilm mirrorless, it is equivalent to a 600mm F/5.6 Full-Frame lens. The OIS in the name indicate that it is equipped with optical image-stabilization. The mechanism gives a 5½ stop efficiency improvement over hand-holding.

The combination of extreme reach and reasonable aperture makes this lens ideal for wildlife photography. It also highly capable for outdoor action sports and extreme activities. Fujifilm optimized optical elements within this prime lens to improve balance compared to typical super-telephoto models. This facilitates hand-holding for long, which is oven required for wildlife photography. The lens barrel is fully weatherproof, dustproof and freezeproof to -10C. So, whether photography takes place in rain, sand or snow, this lens can handle it. Obviously, the front element is optical glass with some premium coatings, which can get damaged. So if shooting near salt-water or flying sand, a clear protector filter is highly recommended. The XF400mm F/4.5R LM OIS WR accepts 95mm screw-on filters.

This super-telephoto prime lens is designed for professional photographers and comes with a complete featureset, including a manual aperture-ring, focus limit, customizable button and tripod attachment. A deep lens hood comes with the lens too. There are direct switches on the lens barrel to control focus and stabilization. Despite having an exceptionally long reach, the lens measures just 24cm long. It is 10.5cm wide in diameter at the front and weighs a hefty 1.2kg. Similar lenses for full-frame weight substantially more though!
