Sony Launches Bright Ultra-Wide Compact Zoom

Sony continues to add more compact models to their lineup of FE lenses that provide Full-Frame coverage for the E-mount. Following the FE 24-50mm F/2.8G launched two months ago, a new lens that perfectly extends the wide side of the focal-range was launched today.

The new Sony FE 16-25mm F/2.8G is an ultra-wide Full-Frame lens with a bright constant maximum aperture. It is designed to be more compact than other F/2.8 ultra-wide lenses by reducing the focal-range, managing to be 33% lighter than the FE 16-35mm F/2.8 GM and also being more compact.

This new lens is labeled G that signifies high-quality optics. It is designed to provide uniform sharpness across the frame. The FE 16-25mm F/2.8G is a full-featured model with dedicated zoom focus and aperture-rings. The is a an AF/MF switch, customizable button and the aperture-ring is declickable. The front of the lens accepts 67mm filters plus a petal-type hood.

This compact lens is fully weatherproof and weighs just 409g, making it one of the lightest F/2.8 zooms. It measures 7.5cm in diameter and 9.2cm in length. It is expected to ship early next month for $1200 USD or $1600 CAD. Preorders should open tomorrow.
