Sony Takes A7R to Mark IV

Sony recently unveiled their 4th-generation high-resolution Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera. Following the highly-acclaimed A7R III which remains one of the very best digital cameras on the market, Sony is leading the way with a huge technology jump for the A7R IV.

The Sony A7R IV marks the debut of an all-new 61 Megapixels Full-Frame Stacked BSI-CMOS sensor, the first of its kind and a 50% leap in resolution compared to the Sony A7R III which boasts a 42 MP CMOS sensor. This sensor is mounted on a state of the art 5-axis image-stabilization system effective to 5.5-stops over hand-holding. This is the most claimed for any body alone. The sensor surface incorporates 567-points for Phase-Detect AF in addition to fast read-out from 425-points for Contrast-Detect AF.

Sony paired the new 61 MP sensor with a high-performance BIONZ X processor that allows the A7R IV to shoot continuously at 10 FPS with full autofocus and metering for each frame. That can be maintained for 70 frames in full-resolution mode and 210 frames when using a 26 megapixels APS-C crop.

Looking rather similar to the rest of the A7 series, the A7R IV remains one of the most compact Full-Frame Digital Cameras on the market. It sports an ultra-high-resolution 0.5" OLED EVF with 5.76 megapixels, 0.78X magnification, 100% coverage and a built-in Eye-Start Sensor. The A7R IV provides plenty of direct controls, including triple control-dials, a traditional mode dial and many customizable buttons. The body features improved weather-sealing compared to its predecessor and a larger grip to improve stability.

This is a full-featured mirrorless with a huge feature-set, including 9-frame bracketing, Interval Timer and 4K video plus a number of modern convenience features such as WiFi and USB-C connectivity.

Sony is preparing to ship the A7R IV on September 12 for a retail price of $3500 USD or $4500 CAD.
