Sony Launches Longest E-Mount Lenses
News
2019.06.11
Today, Sony unveiled their two longest E-mount lenses yet, one GM prime and a G-series super-telephoto zoom, both capable of covering a Full-Frame imaging circle.
First up, the new Sony FE 200-600mm F/5.6-6.3G OSS which is a high-magnification variable aperture super-telephoto zoom. With a range of 200 to 600mm, this lens is one of the longest zoom lenses on the market. This comes a necessarily dim F/5.6-6.3 maximum aperture yet built-in Optical Image Stabilization, although almost no Sony Mirrorless needs it since the majority offer in-body image-stabilization.
Exceptionally for a super-telephoto lens, the FE 200-600mm achieves a 0.66X magnification ratio which makes it fairly close to macro and even higher magnification than some third-party manufacturers actually label as Macro. Despite its long reach, this zoom weighs in at just 2.1kg which is relatively light for this class of lens.
This high-end lens is fully-weatherproof with a removable tripod collar and a number of switches to control focus and stabilization. The front of the lens offers a 95mm filter-thread too. Sony expects to ship this lens for $2000 USD or $2600 CAD this August. Both Adorama and B&H Photo are already accepting pre-orders.
The equally-new Sony FE 600mm F/4 GM prime offers the same super-telephoto reach as the 200-600mm while managing a much brighter F/4 maximum aperture. This makes this G-Master lens a premium and heavy-duty - literally - offering. It is designed with the latest and most advanced Sony optics and also built-in image-stabilization with multiple modes.
Fast AF is provides by two linear motors that drive an inner focus group to minimize lag. Its newly developed optical formulation minimized front glass to keep weight down and the center-of-mass closer to the photographer. At 3kg, this is a heavy lens yet less than comparable models for other lens mounts.
This 600mm prime lens is fully weatherproof and accommodates slide-in 40.5mm filters at the back. It is equipped with plenty of controls for focus and stabilization. Sony intends to ship the FE 600mm F/4 GM for $13000 USD or $16900 CAD in August. Adorama and B&H Photo are ready for pre-orders.
