Sony Lightens Premium Bright Telephoto Zoom Lens

Sony continues to produce high-end professional lenses and providing improved versions to match their latest Full-Frame mirrorless digital cameras.

A newly redesigned Sony FE 70-200mm F/2.8 GM OSS II debuted today. This is superficially the same well-respected specifications for a bright telephoto zoom lens. However, its designed has been completely reworked to excede performance in a relatively compact body. Similar lenses are always heavy but Sony managed to make the lightest of them now. This new FE 70-200mm F/2.8 lens weighs just over 1kg, much less than before.

The Sony FE 70-200mm F/2.8 GM OSS II literally pulls all the stops to achieve the highest level of features. It not only offers triple control-rings, a Quick-Shift Focus-Ring, a wide mechanical zoom ring and a dedicated aperture ring. It also sports triple customizable buttons plus an iris-lock feature. The aperture-ring is declickable as well.

Although unnecessary on modern Sony Full-Frame mirrorless cameras, this telephoto zoom offers optical image stabilization of unspecified performance. The new optic formulation allows this lens to capture closer subjects than before with a minimum focus-distance of 40cm at shortest focal-length and 82cm at the longest. This gives it a 0.3X magnification.

Sony provides a removable lens hood and tripod mount with the lens. The new hold offers a sliding window to allow rotating a polarizing filter with remove the hood itself. Speaking of filters, the Sony FE 70-200mm F/2.8 GM OSS II accepts standard 77mm screw-on filters.
