Nikon Unveils First Weatherproof Z-Mount DX Lens

Today Nikon quietly added a new lens designed exclusively for their APS-C mirrorless digital cameras. Joining only two such lenses is the new Nikkor Z DX 18-140mm F/3.5-6.3 VR. There is exactly one camera yet that can use these lenses but Nikon certainly has future plans for their DX-system that involve higher-end features since this lens features a weatherpoof construction. The Nikon Z50 reviewed here is a very light mirrorless and is not weather-sealed, so for now it will not provide much protection.

This extremely lightweight lens offers a high zoom ratio, equivalent to a 27-210mm lens on a Full-Frame. The usual compromise to achieve this level of zoom is a rather dim aperture which can only open to F/6.3 towards the telephoto end. Given that the Z50 is not stabilized, the new Z DX 18-140mm F/3.5-5.6 VR is equipped with a builtin optical stabilization mechanism effective to 5-stops, compared to hand-holding.

Another feature for efficient control is a smoothly-rotating control-ring that serves as fly-by-wire focus-ring but can be customized for other uses. A wide zoom ring allows precise control while quiet internal focusing system helps this lens work with video. Remember that even manual focusing will produce some sound since the focus-ring is not mechanically linked.
