Sigma Produces Compact Bright Zoom Lens

Sigma Photo continues to push the limits of mirrorless lenses. Just today, they introduced a new compact lens for APS-C cameras with a bright maximum constant aperture of F/2.8 in a lightweight design.

The new Sigma C 18-50mm F/2.8 DC DN is the smallest bright constant aperture-zoom with APS-C coverage. While mirrorless cameras have allowed lenses to become smaller, the majority of new lenses manage that by using a dim or at least variable aperture. This new lens though maintains a bright F/2.8 maximum aperture all along its 18-50mm zoom range. This versatile focal-range is added by close focusing down to 12cm for a good magnification of 0.35X at wide-angle. For completeness, the minimum focus-distance is 30cm at telephoto which produces 0.2X magnification.

This highly compact lens measures 66mm in diameter and 75mm in length. It weighs just 290g which is highly impressive for its specification. Even with such light body, Sigma managed to make the C 18-50mm F/2.8 DC DN weatherproof. The front of the lens accepts 55mm filters and has a bayonet mount for a lens-hood.

The Sigma C 18-50mm F/2.8 DC DN comes in both Sony E and Leica L mount versions. It is expected to ship shortly for a retail price of $550 USD.
