Olympus Unveils Premium Ultra-Zoom
News
2013.10.30
Yesterday, Olympus revealed their first premium ultra-zoom, one of the very few on the market. The all-new Olympus Stylus 1 resembles a miniature OM-D, complete with a large high-resolution EVF and Eye-Start sensor. This ultra-zoom packs a larger-than-usual 12 megapixels 1/1.7" CMOS sensor paired with an optically stabilized 28-300mm F/2.8 constant aperture lens. This 10X optical zoom range covers wide-angle to telephoto while remaining much brighter than the nearly every current ultra-zoom.
The Stylus 1 is one of the most advanced fixed-lens cameras ever made. Its built-in EVF has 1.4 megapixels and offers 100% coverage with 1.15X magnification. With a high number of controls readily available, including dual control-dials, this digital camera is designed for advanced photographers. Its powerful TruePic VI processor engine let it shoot continuously at 7 FPS for up to 70 JPEG images or 25 RAW files.
For convenience, this camera is fitted with two zoom controllers, allowing single-handled or more-stable two-handed operation. Its control-ring which surrounds the lens can also serve as fly-by-wire zoom or manual-focus ring. When it does, the ring step-less and turns smoothly. When used as a control-dial, the ring operates in steps for feedback.

The Olympus Stylus 1 has full manual-controls, as one would expect from a premium digital camera, which include bulb exposures up to 30 minutes, something rarely seen on such cameras. It offers bracketing for exposure, ISO, flash and white-balance. Custom white-balance with fine-tuning in 15 steps along 2 axis is included, as are Olympus's unique variety of Spot metering for midtones, shadows and highlights.
A tilting 3" LCD with 1 megapixels helps frame images at odd angles while built-in WiFi let the camera be remotely controlled and share images easily.

The Olympus Stylus 1 is scheduled to ship this December for a suggested retail price of $699 USD or CDN. Preorders are already accepted at Amazon, Adorama and B&H Photo.
