Nikon Release Lighter Bright Constant-Aperture Full-Frame Telephoto Zoom Lens

News

2026.02.24

A week ahead of the annual CP+ Show in Japan, Nikon launched a new Bright Constant-Aperture Full-Frame Telephoto Zoom lens for their Z-platform of Mirrorless Digital Cameras. This new version has been completely overhauled from its predecessor to deliver improvements across the board, most notably make it lighter.

The new Nikkor Z 70-200mm F/2.8S VR II implements a class telephoto range that is available in dozens of variants from virtually every lens manufacturer. Its name indicates that it is a direct follow up to its predecessor, it comes with plenty of improvements while delivering the same focal and aperture ranges.

Nikkor Z 70-200mm F/2.8S VR II

The biggest improvement the Z 70-200mm F/2.8S VR II brings is a noticeably less have build. The original model tipped the scale at 1.36kg, while this new model weighs 998g. This is almost as light as models with the same focal-range yet a less bright F/4 maximum aperture from other brands. It is important to note that Nikon also makes the Nikkor Z 70-180mm F/2.8 which is 20% lighter with slightly less telephoto reach and no optical image stabilization. The is mostly relevant for attaching to the few bodies that do not off IBIS, mostly APS-C cameras. For the rest, Nikon Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras already offer at least 5 stops of stabilization. The real trade-off between these two lenses is that the 70-200mm F/2.8S VR II is an S-Series and is designed to deliver superior image quality.

The Nikkor Z 70-200mm F/2.8S VR II is a relatively large lens, measuring 9cm in diameter and 21cm in length. It is an entirely internal lens which means that it does not change length while zooming. It uses an internal Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor, which is the name of the newest supersonic AF driving motor from Nikon. Expect quick and quiet autofocus with this lens. The front of the lens accepts standard 77mm scew-on filters plus a petal-type lens hood. Compared to the original Z 70-200mm F/2.8S, the upgraded model can focus closer. It can now reach 0.3X magnification, up from 0.2X. However, the Z 70-180mm F/2.8 can do better with a 0.48X max magnification. This is the only specification, other than weight which is better in the non S-Series model.

As a professional lens, the Nikkor Z 70-200mm F/2.8S VR II is durably built and is fully weatherproof. It offers two customizable function buttons, one declickable control-ring, plus large focus and zoom rings. There is also a focus limiter function. To operate this with better balance on a tripod, this lens comes with a detachale lens foot and color.

Nikon expects to ship this premium lens at the end of March. It will come in at a hefty $3200 USD or $4200 CAD price tag. Interested buyers can already pre-order one from our reputable affiliates Adorama and B&H Photo.
