Venus Optics Unveils Ultra Wide Perspective Control Lens Duo
News
2026.03.10
Venus Optics just unveiled a pair of perspective control lens with an ultra-wide angle-of-view. These new lenses match the widest Tilt or Shift lenses on the market and bring their new capabilities to no less than six mounts! The manufacturer, famous for distortion-free lenses, is producing Shift-Only and full Tilt-Shift lenses. Shift-Only models are much less complex and are offered at a substantially lower price.
The new Laowa 17mm F/4 Zero-D Tilt-Shift captures an extremely wide field-of-view. When mounted on a Full-Frame Digital Mirrorless Camera, it spans &104;°. On a Medium-Format camera, it will be even wider. Laowa does not specify an angle-of-view. The only other Shift lens this wide is the Canon TS-E F/4L which is available exclusively for the Canon EF-mount. Now, with these new lenses by Venus Optics, the capability extends to Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon, Z, Fujifilm G, Hasselblad XCD and Leica L-mounts. Note that some Leica mount models are incompatible with the Tilt-Shift version due to lacking sufficient space around the lens mount.
All new lenses announced today provide a moderate F/4 maximum aperture backed by a 14-blade iris to render ultra-smooth out-of-focus areas. These lenses can focus down to 25cm from the focal-plane to render their maximum 0.13X magnification. Exceptionally for lenses this wide, the front has a filter-thread to accommodate large 86mm screw-on filters.
The Tilt-Shift lens can Tilt ±10° around a single axis which can be oriented in any direction. It also offers Shift movements along the focus plane. For Full-Frame mounts, ±12mm of motion is possible without significant vignetting. On a Medium-Format mount, the range of motion is limited to ±8mm. Oddly, Shift Only models allow ±11mm with Full-Frame coverage yet still ±8mm with Medium-Format.
Specifications for the Laowa 17mm F/4 Zero-D Shift Lens are virtually identical. Shift Only variants are fractionally lighter, at 770g vs 810g. Both lenses have the same size and diameter but the base of the Shift model is more compact which is why there are no compatibility issues with any camera and these models. The truly significant difference between the two variations is price. Model with both Tilt and Shift capabilities carry a retail price of $1250 USD, while Shift Only models cost $1000 USD. The price difference is worth considering by those who do not expect to need any Tilt adjustments. For architecture and panoramic photography, only Tilt movements are required.
Perspective Control lenses never support autofocus but they usually allow electronic aperture control. These ones do not though, meaning that the user has to manually set the aperture on the lens and that the camera does not record EXIF info when using one of these Laowa lenses. This is typical for lenses from Venus Optics.

The combination of Shift and Zero-D optical design promises these lenses can render images with perfectly straight lines by eliminating keystoning and optical distortion. This is extremely practical when photography architecture, both outdoors and indoors. Sample images provided with the press release seem to support this. A Tilt-Shift lens is can also be useful for certain arquitectural imagery yet are most often used for creative control. Making scenes appear to be miniatures is a famous optical illusion created by having an angled focus-plane.
Specialized lenses such as these are only produced by a handful of manufacturers. Among camera makers, these are only made by Canon, Fujifilm and Nikon. Photographers that use other brands of cameras must rely on third-party lens manufacturers such as Venus Optics to bridge the gap in lens lineups. Both variants of the new Tilt-Shift and Shift Only lenses are available for 6 Mirrorless mounts:
- Sony E - Tilt-Shift - Shift Only
- Nikon Z - Tilt-Shift - Shift Only
- Canon RF - Tilt-Shift - Shift Only
- Leica L - Tilt-Shift - Shift Only
- Fujifilm G - Tilt-Shift - Shift Only
- Hasselblad XCD - Tilt-Shift - Shift Only
