This week Hasselblad launched a Lightweight Field Kit of their latest Medium Format Mirrorless Digital Camera. Medium Format and light weight are rarely used to describe the same thing yet in this case Hasselblad is right. With their X2D 100C camera and some of their relatively compact prime lenses, one can indeed have something light and compact in hand.
The new field kit comprises of the Hasselblad X2D 100C plus the ultra-wide XCD 21mm F/4 and the normal XCD 45mm F/4P. All together these weight just under 2kg. A DSLR system and even most mirrorless systems have a set of camera and lenses that are just as light, the fact that Hasselblad managed with Medium Format is a huge deal! This is a 100 Megapixels camera that is truly portable.
The output of the Hasselblad X2D is absolutely stunning with incredible detail provided by its 100 megapixels sensor, nuanced color thanks to its 16-bit photosites and class-leading 15-stop dynamic-range. Additionally, the X2D 100C features the very best image-stabilization system for Medium-Format, once that rivals top Full-Frame offerings due to its 7-stops of efficiency. This is absolutely crucial for such high resolution sensor when used in hand. The sensor comes with 294 Phase-Detection points to focus quickly and accurately.
The new Hasselblad X2D Lightweight Field Kit has a launch price of $12760 USD and is available immediately. Both B&H Photo and Adorama carry it and can ship to the US and Canada, plus many other countries. Certainly this is pricey gear but it is well-priced for a Medium-Format System. The 100 MP of resolution allows the X2D to pull some extra versatility from the XCD 21mm F/4 and XCD 45 F/4P lenses. The former captures a 100° field-of-view, making it an ultra-wide lens equivalent to a 16mm Full-Frame lens. One can crop down from there to 45mm for smaller viewing angles while still keeping a very good amount of resolution. Similarly, the later captures 60° and can be cropped down to half of that while still leaving 25 MP of resolution.
