Canon Announces Mysterious Camera and 5 More
News
2013.08.24
Canon sent out a slew of announcements early this morning, including mention of a mysterious camera named the Canon Powershot S200. No image or detailed specifications has been received except that this is an ultra-compact with a bright ultra-wide 24-120mm F/2-5.9 optical zoom lens. It is equipped with a 10 MP CCD of unspecified size which could be larger than usual for an ultra-compact. It is scheduled to be available next month for $349 CDN. No US announcement has been made yet.
This announcement came in the middle of press releases unveiling 5 more cameras, including an ultra-compact which is part of a related lineup. The Canon Powershot S120 follows the diminutive premium Canon Powershot S110 and adds WiFi to the feature set. It retains the larger-than-usual 1/1.7" CMOS sensor with 12 megapixels and ultra-bright F/1.8-5.7 ultra-wide 5X optical zoom lens, also equivalent to 24-120mm.

As a premium model, this one offers full manual-controls and dual control-dials for efficiency. Its CMOS sensor can capture full-resolution images at 9.4 FPS for up to a whopping 635 JPEG images. Full 1080p HD video at a smooth 60 FPS is included too. It is scheduled to be available in October this year for a suggested price of $449 CDN or USD.

A larger premium compact using the same 12 megapixels 1/1.7" CMOS sensor was also been unveiled. The Canon Powershot G16 also adds WiFi to its predecessor with which it shares an ultra-bright F/1.8-2.8 wide-angle 28-140mm lens. The cost of this lens which remains bright at the long-end is a much larger camera body. Canon took advantage of this and added an optical tunnel viewfinder as well as a hot-shoe for external lighting.
Like the rest of the G-series, the G16 offers full manual-controls with dual control-dials. It records 1080p HD video at 60 FPS and shoots continuously at 9.3 FPS for up to 522 JPEG images. This model will be available in October 2013 at a suggested price of $549 CDN or USD.

The new Canon Powershot SX170 IS shows Canon's dedication to manual-controls among travel zooms by offering a capable yet compact camera with a 16 megapixels CCD sensor paired with a 16X wide-angle optical zoom lens. This model is a redesign of the SX160 with the newer model using a proprietary Lithium-Ion battery instead of standard AA ones which gives it lower battery-life. The SX170 is scheduled to arrive this September for $199 CDN or $179 USD.

A medium-sized ultra-zoom with an incredibly compact ultra-wide 30X optical zoom lens was also revealed. The Canon Powershot SX510 HS offers a high-speed 12 megapixels CMOS sensor capable of recording full 1080p HD video. It offers full manual-controls and includes built-in WiFi. It is expected next month for $299 CDN or $249 USD.

The last camera unveiled is the Canon Powershot N Facebook Edition. This one is nearly identical to the original Canon Powershot N, offering its unusual square style and tilting display. The new Facebook feature lets it instantly share images on the social-site with privacy settings to control sharing. This camera is expected to cost $299 USD next month directly from the online Canon store.
