Night Crops

Images below are all unmodified 100% crops from their respective cameras. A specific ISO was set for each picture on-camera but exposure and white-balance were fully automatic. Here the 10 megapixels HP Photosmart is compared to the 6 megapixels Fuji Finepix F10. The F10 is another capable ultra-compact camera. Altough it does not have any manual controls, it has a wide ISO range and is the previous image quality champion amoing ultra-compact cameras, just behind the Fuji Finepix F30.

ISO 100- 8s F3.4

ISO 200- 8s F3.5

ISO 200- 4s F3.4

ISO 400- 4s F3.5

ISO 400- 2.1s F3.4

This particular crop is not as bad as it gets for the HP R967, but we can easily tell that noise is present at all ISO settings. The F10 compared to it is much smoother in appearance. Thanks to a significantly higher resolution, the HP shows more details.

Both color and exposure are different. The HP is much easier to control than the F10 in low-light. The result is that the F10 produced darker images. Recall that in brighter conditions, it is normaly the opposite. As for white-balance, the HP Photosmart R967 performs much better in the presence of artificial lighting. Well done HP! Some expensive DSLR cameras do not even do as well. This is a bonus for beginners who rather keep their cameras on auto-white-balance.
