Fujifilm X-M1 Summary
Fuji X-M1 Assessment
The Fuji X-M1 fits between the flagship X-E2
Fujifilm X-E2 and basic X-A1
Fujifilm X-A1. It features Fuji's first-generation 16 megapixels X-Trans CMOS sensor and a second generation EXR II processor which captures full-resolution images at 5.6 FPS and 1080p HD video at 30 FPS.
Decidedly entry-level by its lack of a viewfinder, the X-M1 offers a simple feature-set yet has a high number of controls, including dual control-dials. There is also a mode-dial and a standard hot-shoe, plus most Fuji lenses have an aperture-ring too.
The Fuji X-M1 is the most affordable camera with an X-Trans sensor and only of a handful of such entry-level models without an anti-alias filter. The benefit of the X-Trans sensor is does not need a low-pass filter to prevent moire artifacts. This lets it maximize lens sharpness and therefore image-quality, which is exactly where the Fuji X-M1 delivers results above its peers. Noise is extremely low, details are rendered sharply and the dynamic-range is great.
PROS | CONS |
---|---|
Extremely low image noise until ISO 1600 | Autofocus speed is below average |
Excellent retention of details | Slow shot-to-shot speed with autofocus |
Great dynamic-range | Poor AWB accuracy |
Reliable metering | Not Exposure-Priority |
Nicely saturated colors | EC dial moves easily |
Very good automatic white-balance | Delay up to 2s to start video recording |
Instant shutter-lag | Short battery-life |
High number of external controls | |
Good build quality | |
Excellent Excellent |
While image-quality is exemplary, no camera is perfect and this one too has some weak points. Its Contrast-Detect AF system falls behind that of competing models and even further behind those using Phase-Detect AF. Shot-to-shot speeds are on the slow-side as well, so this camera is not ideal for capturing action. Generally though, the X-M1 is responsive with a nearly instant shutter-lag and reasonable black-out time.
People looking for great image-quality at an affordable price have a good deal to like about the Fuji X-M1. This mirrorless itself is also relatively compact and saves weight compared to a DSLR. While Fuji's lenses are not the smallest, most offer impressive image-quality which allow the X-Trans sensor to show its full potential.
