Zeiss ZX1 Finally Reaches Production

The unusual Zeiss ZX1 is finally shipping two years after its launch. Announced in September 2018, the ZX1 is a Full-Frame Digital Camera with a fixed prime lens. The sensor is a unique 37 MP CMOS sensor with ISO 80-51200 sensitivity range which is paired with an unstabilized 35mm F/2 lens. Autofocus is performed by Contrast-Detect at 255-Points. Continuous shooting at a slow 3 FPS is available plus 4K Ultra-HD video capture.

Zeiss is introducing a completely different workflow with the ZX1 by making it an all-in-one product to capture images and video, edit and share images. The camera record pictures internally to a whopping 512GB of internal memory while it incorporates a version of Adobe Lightroom to process images which can captured in JPEG or DNG format. The camera is controlled by a huge 4.3" Touchscreen LCD and a limited number of controls, including a few direct dials.

The entire camera is designed for ergonomic comfort with a unique bend on the back which complements a relatively shallow grip. Framing is provided by an exceptionally large 0.7" EVF with an ultra-sharp 5.8 megapixels, 0.74X coverage and 100% coverage, although it is missing an Eye-Start Sensor. The camera offers WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 LE connectivity to send images once processed.
