Sony Produces Super Macro GMaster Lens

This morning Sony Electronics unveiled their first Super-Macro lens that achieves greater than 1:1 magnification. It is the second such macro lens with autofocus capabilities for Sony E mount. Some exist for other mounts yet those are only a handful.

The new Sony FE 100mm F/2.8 Macro GM OSS is a ultra-premium prime lens launched as part of the G Master series. These lenses use Sony state-of-the-art technology and, just by looking at the image above, we can see that this is the most feature-packed macro lens yet! At its core is a completely new optical design with a 100mm focal-length that focuses down to 26cm, giving maximum magnification of 1.4X that can be doubled to 2.8X using a tele-converter.

This prime macro lens has a bright F/2.8 maximum aperture which is the most common for macro lenses. Depth of field is really shallow at F/2.8 given that focus-distances are so short. Typical macro lenses are also great for reproducing artwork too. With its 100mm focal-length, this one is also extremely well-suited for portraits. Its wide aperture allows subjects to be isolated from the background that is rendered ultra-smoothly thanks to an 11-point iris. There is dedicated aperture-ring plus an Iris-Lock switch to avoid accidental changes.

The Iris-Lock switch is accompanied by three more! One toggles Optical Stabilization On or Off, another enables a focus-limiter, while the last toggles between AF and DMF, also known as Quick-Shift AF. This is really useful for a macro lens as they are generally focused manually. In DMF mode, the camera can autofocus approximately and the user refine it without pressing any buttons. Further ahead on the barrel there is a standard AF/MF switch plus a focus-hold button. This lens accepts common 67mm screen on filters and, as all G Master lenses, is fully weatherproof. Still, at 646g, it is relatively light compared to its specifications.

Sony expects to ship the new Sony FE 100mm F/2.8 Macro GM OSS some time in November. It carries a retail price of $1500 USD or $1800 CAD.
