Sony Launches Bright G Master Telephoto Lens

A new G Master series lens was announced just this morning. This bright telephoto prime brings in all Sony lens advancements into a new ultra-premium model.

The new Sony FE 300mm F/2.8 GM OSS offers one of the most desirable focal-length for action photographers. Combined with its bright F/2.8 maximum aperture, this lens is highly suitable for sports, including those played indoors. For completeness, this new prime lens offers builtin image-stabilization of unspecified efficiency yet this does not make any difference for its intended use.

Even though it is clearly a large lens in absolute terms, this is the lightest bright aperture telephoto lens to date. Its barrel is just over 26cm long and it weighs 1.4kg. Sony has long been the champions of miniaturization and it is very noticeable with the FE 300mm F/2.8 GM. To achieve blazing fast autofocus, this lens has dual AF motors. A typical switch on the side toggles between AF and MF mode. Another, possibly for the first time ever on a lens, switchs the focus ring from standard to DMF mode. This might save people from accidentally rotating the focus ring at a crucial moment.

This prime lens is feature-packed. It comes with a customizable function ring, buttons to limit focus and a 3-mode image-stabilization switch. A special slot at the rear accepts 40.5mm drop-in filters. There is also a tripod mount that is frequently found on heavy lenses, custom buttons on multiple sides and a new mechanism to mound the lens hood.

The Sony FE 300mm F/2.8 GM OSS will not be available until Spring 2024 but there is no reason for this not to be an exceptional lens. It is light enough to be used handheld which can turn it onto a great street photography and wildlife photography lens. When it becomes available for pre-order or sale, it will come in at $6000 USD.
