Sony FE 14mm F/1.8 G-Master Revealed

Sony just introduced their widest prime lens for Full-Frame mirrorless digital cameras. This lens expands choices available for E-mount cameras and remains fairly wide on APS-C models.

The new Sony FE 14mm F/1.8 GM is part of the premium G-Master series that is designed to deliver the highest image-quality possible. This prime lens captures an extremely-wide 114° field-of-view and offers an ultra-bright F/1.8 maximum aperture which is very rare among such wide rectilinear lenses. This focal-length can be used to capture architecture, monuments and enormous interiors. The ultra-bright maximum aperture is highly beneficial when photography dimly lit subjects such as the inside of churches and temples but should also excel when it comes to astrophotography.

As a premium lens, this model comes with all the latest Sony features, including a dedicated declickable aperture-ring, customizable function button and wide focus-ring. A pair of linear motors inside the lens allows quick autofocus and fly-by-wire manual focusing. Focus can be achieved at 25mm which gives a maximum 0.1X magnification. Due to its highly curved front lens element, the FE 14mm F/1.8 GM requires a fixed lens hood and cannot accommodate front-mounted filters. It is equipped with a slot at the back to insert gel filters.

The Sony FE 14mm F/1.8 GM weighs just 460g which is extraordinary considering its huge angle-of-view and ultra-bight aperture. It is also relatively compact at 10cm long and 8cm wide. Sony plans to start shipping their newest lens next month for $1600 USD or $2100 CAD. B&H Photo are already accepting pre-orders.
