Sigma Unveils Unique Lens Trio
News
2025.09.09
Sigma Photo just unveiled a trio of new lenses for Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras. Two are bright primes part of the premium Art series and one is a unique Contemporary ultra-zoom lens. All new additions are coming in Sony E-mount or Leica L-mount variants.
The most ground-breaking addition is the Sigma C 20-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DG. Its focal-range is similar to several ultra-zoom lenses except that this model provides this range with Full-Frame coverage! At 20mm this lens offers a 94° angle-of-view, making it an ultra-wide ultra-zoom, the very first of its kind. The obvious compromise is that the maximum aperture of the Sigma C 20-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DG gets very dim towards telephoto.
Even with its extreme range, the C 20-200mm only weighs 560g. Its simple body is minimalist for a lens. There is a 72mm filter-thread at the front. The only other controls are zoom and focus rings. Focus settings must be set on camera and this lens is expected to be attached to a camera with IBIS. Otherwise, its dim long end is going to be of limited use unless mounted on a tripod. The optics Sigma designed for this lens can reach 0.5X magnification.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the ultra-premium Sigma A 35mm F/1.2 DG II made its debug. This one is a redesigned version of the brightest lens by Sigma Photo. The new version has been made lighter and smaller. The 35mm is a common focal-length for Full-Frame cameras and the ultra-bright F/1.2 maximum aperture allows to render smooth out-of-focus areas. This is ideal for night and group photography.
The Sigma A 35mm F/1.2 DG II is fully weatherproof. It offers a dedicated declickable aperture-ring plus a large dampened focus-ring and focus-mode switch. This model also accepts 72mm filters. It is surprisingly compact and relatively light compared to its peers. At 755g, its weight will definitely be felt yet similar lenses, including its predecessor, weigh over 1kg! The barrel is only 8cm long which is quite an achievement!
Compared to the 35mm above, the new Sigma A 135mm F/1.4 DG is enormous. This ultra-bright telephoto lens specialized for close-up portraits and performance photography. It over 1.4kg, this weatherproof lens will be hard to use over prolonged periods. The 135mm focal-length and F/1.4 aperture make this lens produce a razor-thin depth-of-field to isolate subject and produce images with an extremely smooth background.
The Sigma A 135mm F/1.4 DG is a premium lens among an ultra premium series. It is the bright lens currently with this focal-length. There is a 105mm filter-thread at the front, as necessitated by the enormous front glass. At 0.14X magnification, this lens cannot handle small details but it can get close to people-size subjects.
