Sigma Launches Dual-Zoom Super-Telephoto Lens
News
2021.08.04
Today Sigma Photo launched a completely unique super-telephoto zoom lens for Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras. Joining their Sport series of high-performance optics designed for professionals is a long zoom with a familiar specifications yet a completely unique design.
The new Sigma S 150-600mm F/5-6.3 DG DN OS offers Full-Frame coverage in a sturdy weatherproof body. Its huge reach comes at the cost of a rather dim maximum aperture suitable to capture distant subjects but not so much action as its naming implies. Even though most modern mirrorless cameras now offer builtin stabilization, the Sigma offers its own mechanism which is effective to 4-stops according to the CIPA standard. As this is a third-party lens, it may not participate in a form of Dual-Stabilization, yet one should be capable of acheiving 5½-stops on a modern Sony or Panasonic mirrorless, leaving the OS to those owning one of the few Sigma or Leica mirrorless on the market.
Optics in this super-telephoto lens are designed for exceptional image quality and optimized to focus much more closely than other super-long lenses. With a minimum focus-distance of 58cm at wide-angle and 280cm at telephoto, the Sigma S 150-600mm F/5-6.3 DG DN OS can achieve 0.34X magnification. The front of the lens is compatible with 95mm screw-on filters.
Controls of this new lens are outstanding. As with most lenses of this class, it has a smooth focus-ring and focus limiter switch plus stabilization control. There is also a rotating collar to attach the lens directly onto a tripod. A wide zoom ring introduces a completely unique mechanism controlled by a a new Zoom Torque Switch. This switch toggles the zoom mechanism from a standard rotating zoom-ring to a fast pull-out system. It also double as a Zoom-Lock to prevent such heavy lens from extending while being carried. This provides a choice between two resistance levels to offer precision or fast zoom control.
This is a fairly large and heavy lens overall, weighing 2.1kg and measuring 27cm long, but it is signigicantly less so compared to other lenses covering a similar focal-range. This is achieved by a dedicated mirrorless design which is why the Sigma S 150-600mm F/5-6.3 DG DN OS will be available exclusively in Sony E and Leica L mounts. Equally surprisingly low its its introductory price of $1500 USD for such a long weatherproof lens. This lens currently offers the longest reach for both Leica L-mount and Sony FE-mount Full-Frame cameras!
The new Sigma S 150-600mm F/5-6.3 DG DN OS lens is expected to ship next month for $1500 USD and can already be pre-ordered from:
