Peak Design Starts Pro Tripod Funding

News

2025.06.17

Five years ago Peak Design revolutionized tripod design after decades by introducing new trapezoid legs and a unique space-saving ball-head. Today, the company is launching a KickStarter campaign for a new professional series of tripods. Yes, there are multiple models being funded right now!

The new Peak Design Pro Tripod series takes the original Travel Tripod design, upgrades it construction and packs it with features. This new line of camera support comes in three functionally-identical sizes: Light, Medium and Tall. The medium-size is simply known as the Pro Tripod.

Peak Design Pro Tripod Series

All these new tripods are substantially larger and heavier than the original model to give them more stability and a more versatile head. Those who read our Peak Design Travel Tripod review will know that main compromise of the original model was its restrictive head. The head on these new tripod is completely different, which we will get to further down.

The new Pro Tripod series features trapezoid carbon-fiber legs with improved rigidity. Each has 4-section legs with clamps that can be opened efficiently. These legs fit tightly together around a completely new center column that makes the packed width of these tripods exceptionally compact, between 85 and 93mm, depending on the particular model. The clamps at the top and bottom of each legs have a more streamlined design to shave a few millimeters of diameter.

Most upgrades except for construction are part of the new ball-head. This one lands slightly higher than the tripod legs to provide 15° of tilt without extending the column, something that is not possible with the original model. Secondly, there is now an integrated pan-lock on the ball-head which ensures that it can only be rotated without tilting or rolling the camera. This was possibly one of the most missed features on the Travel Tripod. Additionally, the new head has a quick-attachment mechanism plus a redundant security lock.

All new Peak Design Pro Tripods and the original Travel Tripod are compared here:

There is the most significant improvement in capacity which reflects the improved construction of the series. At 16kg for the Light model, that is 77% more than the Travel version. For that it extends only slightly more without the center column extended and about 10cm more at most. This is not significant for an almost 25% jump in both weight and folded length.

Specifications shown above indicate a surprisingly small difference between the Lite and standard Pro model, which is unexpected. It is curious why the Lite model was not made to fold down to 45cm, splitting the difference between the Travel and Pro versions. For an extra 0.2kg, the Pro model extends 5cm more while adding 10% capacity. The Tall variant however is only slightly heavier while extending significantly more, 24cm extra without the center column extended and 29cm with it.

Along with new increased capacity, these new tripods justifiably command higher prices ranging from $800 USD to $1000 USD. These are expensive items but reasonably priced for the unique design and features they deliver. During the KickStarter campaign which launched today, backers are able to secure all these new tripod at lower prices corresponding to an average discount of 25%.
