Panasonic Boosts Micro Four-Thirds Resolution with GX8

The new Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 takes Micro Four-Thirds up a notch with the first 20 megapixels sensor and an innovative Dual Image Stabilization system which compensates for shake along a total of 6 axis, 4 from Sensor-Shift and Sensor-Rotation movements, plus 2 with compatible Optically-Stabilized lenses.

This second generation GX-series mirrorless improves upon the original Panasonic GX7 reviewed here on almost all levels. The new larger body is now fully weather-sealed and offers a much higher-resolution 2.4 megapixels EVF with 100% coverage and 0.7X magnification. Like on its predecessor, the EVF tilts up for added versatility. One step sideways is that the new LCD hinge rotates instead of tilts which makes it more awkward to frame high and low shots in landscape orientation but easier in portrait orientation.

With its new high-speed Venus VI processor, the Panasonic GX7 can capture full 4K Ultra-HD video at 30 FPS. A new hybrid shutter allows up to 8 FPS mechanical drive and also 30 FPS at 4K using the electronic-shutter. The same electronic-shutter mode allows to freeze action at up to 1/16000s while the mechanical mode makes Bulb exposures possible for 30 minutes.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 offers professional controls and a highly sophisticated feature-set. It is expected this September of $1199 USD or $1599 CDN. Adorama and B&H Photo are already accepting pre-orders.
