Olympus Introduces First 4th Generation OM-D

Olympus is starting their next generation OM-D mirrorless starting with the entry-level series. The new Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV sports a familiar look and feature set. It succeeds the capable and extremely compact Olympus E-M10 Mark III reviewed here, mostly with a more modern imaging pipeline.

The new Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is a minor upgrade to its predecessor. Like the Mark III before it, this diminutive mirrorless packs a plenty of features in its freezeproof body, fitted with a builtin EVF and dual control-dials. Externally, the Mark IV only changes the LCD hinge to allow downward tilting to 180° for taking selfies.

Internally though, Olympus improved the entire imaging pipeline. A new 20 megapixels Four-Thirds CMOS sensor increases resolution by 25% and is paired with a faster TruePic VIII processor. The result is that the new E-M10 Mark IV can continuously capture full-resolution images at 15 FPS when using the electronic-shutter. Going with a mechanical-shutter gives it unlimited continuous shooting for RAW or JPEG at 8.7 FPS. The final component with an upgrade is the builtin 5-axis image-stabilization system which now compensates for 4.5-stops of camera shake.

Olympus expects to ship the new E-M10 Mark IV at the end of next month for $700 USD or $1000 CAD. Interested Canadians can already preorder from Amazon.ca, while Adorama and B&H Photo based in the US can accept pre-orders from there and abroad (additional duty is required for most countries).
