Nikon Adds Second 600mm Z-Mount Prime Lens
News

Nikon just launched their second 600mm for the Z-platform of Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras. It joins a second lens of the same focal-length plus a second different compact super-telephoto lens to fill in gaps in price and bulk within the Z-mount lineup.
The new Nikkor Z 600mm F/6.3S VR provides Full-Frame coverage with a 600mm focal-length that captures a 2.4° angle-of-view. Without a doubt this is a long lens yet with the use of dual Fresnel optics, Nikon managed to reduce the size and weight of this model significantly. Comparing it to the Nikkor Z 600mm F/4S TC VR, really shows the difference: The newer model weighs 1.5kg while the other almost 3.3kg. The barrel length of the F/6.3 version is 28cm while the F/4 measures 44cm! Proportionally, this is the highest reduction achieved by a Fresnel lens, compared to the standard version.
Its S-series naming signifies that optics in the Nikon Z 600mm F/6.3S VR is the highest quality. Expect excellent image-quality with low distortion, aberrations and great flare resistance. The body of the lens is weatherproof, as all S-series lenses. A 95mm filter-thread makes it possible to mound screw-on filters, unlike its larger counterpart, while a bayonet at the front supports a deep lens hood. The new tripod foot comes with quick-release system.
There is an optical image-stabilization system built into the lens which provides 5½ stops of efficiency by itself. When mounted on a camera with Sync-IS, the system manages 6-stops of vibration reduction. Keep in mind that such number is camera dependent and newer cameras could one day push this further. There is large focus ring that supports Quick-Shift Autofocus at the front, plus a customizable control-ring, custimizable button, AF limiter and VR switch. These are all the features available on high-end lenses.
Nikon expects to ship the lens this month for $4800 USD or $6500 CAD. This specialty lenses is bound to be a popular model of birding and wildlife photography. One can already be preordered from Adorama or B&H Photo.
