Canon Reveals Widest Constant Aperture Zoom Lens

Canon just announced their widest rectilinear zoom lens yet, one that matches the widest zoom lenses available in terms of angle-of-view yet with a constant-aperture. This new lens is made exclusively for Canon RF-mount and is by far the widest zoom native to this mount.

The new Canon RF 10-20mm F/4L IS STM is a premium L-series lens with a complete feature set and build to match. This unique lens can capture a 130° field-of-view with a moderate F/4 maximum aperture. This makes the lens ideal for large architecture, monuments and building interiors. It will also be extremely well-suited to capture images of stars and sweeping landscapes.

On a Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera, the angle-of-view of the RF 10-20mm F/4L spans 94-130° which is incredibly wide. Only a handful of third party lenses can match it. Optics of this lens require a bulbous front lens element which prevents the use of screw-on filters. A protective hood is fixed to the front of the lens. An optical image stabilization system provides 5-stop of efficiency for when the lens is mounted on a camera without IBIS. Otherwise, top-of-the-line Canon RF cameras provide 8-stop efficiency themselves.

Controls are plentiful on this lens. There is a typical zoom ring, a electronically-coupled Quick-Shift Focus ring, a control-dial, A/F switch, IS switch plus a customizable function button. The barrel of the Canon RF 10-20mm F/4L has a fixed 11.2cm length and is 8.4cm in diameter. The lens weighs 570g which is exceptionally light for such a wide constant-aperture lens. It even includes weather-proofing like other L-series lenses.
