New Nikon Z 400mm Lens

A new telephoto lens was added to the Nikon lineup of Full-Frame Mirrorless lenses to become the second-longest lens from Nikon designed naively for Z-mount. It joins 25 other first-party Z-mount lenses.

The new Nikkor Z 400mm F/4.5S VR captures an extremely narrow 4° angle-of-view with a moderate maximum aperture of F/4.5. It is a professional-grade lens with fully weather-sealed. In addition to the requisite focus-ring, it also offers a customizable control-ring. This lens comes with a 5½-stop optical stabilization mechanism. Most Nikon Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras already deliver this level of stabilization but they can inch ½-stops more by combining both mechanisms.

This lens can focus down to 2.5m from the focal-plane, where it achieves a 0.16X magnification.. A limiter-switch can prevent it from autofocusing closer than 6m. There is a large 95mm filter-thread at the front and a function button at the back. Another button can recall a preset focus-distance.

The main selling point of the new Nikon Z 400mm F/4.5S VR compared to the existing Nikon Z 400mm F/2.8S is that the lens introduced today is 60% lighter. It trades out just over 1 full-stop of brightness and a teleconverter to achieve a relatively light 1160g.

Nikon intends to ship the new Z 400mm F/4.5S VR in July for $3250 USD or $4200 CAD. Preorders are already live at Adorama and B&H Photo.
