Nikon Updates Entry-Level DSLR and Lenses
News
2016.08.23
Nikon recently unveiled an upgrade to their highly successful entry-level DSLR with the new D3400. Outwardly nearly identical to its predecessor, the Nikon D3400 features a modern 24 megapixels APS-C CMOS sensor with a native ISO 100 to 25,600 sensitivity range, two stops more than the D3300. A newer EXPEED 4 image processor promises to deliver better rendition of images and faster processing.
The Nikon D3400 keeps most specifications of the D3300 with a 5 FPS continuous drive, 1/4000-30s shutter-speed range, 1080p HD video capture at 60 FPS and 3" LCD which still has 920K pixels. The viewfinder is also identical with 95% coverage and 0.85X magnification. The optional audio-input was dropped and, very surprisingly, the sensor-cleaning mechanism. The power of the flash was also reduced to allow for a much longer battery life of 1200 shots-per-charge vs 700.
Nikon added Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity, rather than the more common WiFi which requires more power. It allows it to maintain a constant link with a compatible device to make sharing quicker than ever. Those who still would like WiFi which has a longer range can use EyeFi cards in the D3400.
Four new lenses were launched along with the Nikon D3400. Two are standard 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 kit lenses which feature stepping autofocus motors instead of the usual super-sonic ones found in previous generations of Nikon kit-lenses. Stepping motors are designed to improve performance during Live-View and video capture by being quieter and offering smoother focus transitions. One of the lenses offers Vibration Reduction, but not the other.
Twin telephoto lenses were also announced. They follow the same formula, nearly identical lenses with and without Vibration Reduction. Although, at such long focal-length and dim aperture, image stabilization is highly recommended. These lenses cover a 70-300mm focal-range with maximum F/4.5-6.3 aperture. Both use the same stepping motors as the kit lenses above.
The new Nikon D3400 and all these lenses are expected to be available next month. Here are the suggesting pricing: Click on the corresponding link for (pre)ordering options.
