Nikon Introduces Six Digital Cameras

It has been a busy day in the world of digital cameras and Nikon did its part by launching six new cameras.

First up is an upgrade to the Nikon Coolpix P7000 reviewed here. The new P7100 keeps the excellent sensor used by its predecessor and improves performance with a faster autofocus and more responsive interface. It also adds a third control-dial, making it the second camera today to feature more control-dials than any DSLR.

Personally, I was expecting to see 3 control-dials appear but on high-end DSLRs, because of their emphasis on efficiency. The Nikon Coolpix P7100 is an enthusiast camera aimed photographers who want to keep photographic controls when they cannot carry big and heavy gear, so it is perfect for this type of advancement.

Next up is Nikon's first rugged compact, the Coolpix AW100. This one is waterproof to 10m underwater, shockproof to 1.5m drops, weatherproof to -10C and dustproof. It uses a 16 MP behind a folded-optics lens equivalent to 28-140mm. It also includes a GPS and electronic compass. Its CMOS sensor lets it shoot continuously at 7.1 FPS and record 1080p HD video with stereo sound.

The last 4 models are upgrades to previous ultra-compact cameras:

• Coolpix S1200pj - A revised version of the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj we reviewed with a more powerful 20 lumen projector instead of 14.
• Coolpix S100 - Ultra-compact with a non-protruding wide-angle lens equivalent to 28-140mm and a 16 MP CMOS sensor which gives it full HD video recording capability.
• Coolpix S8200 - A rather slim travel zoom which packs a 14X ultra-wide optical zoom lens paired with a 16 MP CMOS sensor. Full 1080 HD video recording included with all CMOS sensors!
• Coolpix S6200 - An ultra-compact with a whopping 10X ultra-wide optical zoom lens this time using a 16 MP CCD. It records 720p video.
