Canon Adds New RF Lens and Cinema Digital Camera

This morning Canon made several announcements that coincide with IBC, the annual cinema conference held in Amsterdam. The most on-topic new product is the Canon EOS C50, a Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera designed specifically for video. This mirrorless packs a completely new 32 Megapixels Dual Pixel CMOS AF II sensor that can record 7K video at 60 FPS and 4K at 120 FPS.

Digital camera makers have been aiming at the video and, even more lucrative, Cinema market for several years since new sensors are able to deliver superior quality video compared to traditional video cameras. The C50 is the first from Canon and brings in an incredible feature-set. The already mentioned Dual Pixel AF is a major one but so a 5-axis IBIS that is effective to 7½ stops. Similarly to recent offerings from different manufacturers, this is a rather compact video-centric camera that only features a rear screen and no viewfinder. The Canon EOS C50 is due at the end of November for $3900 USD.

Along the new digital camera is also a new prime lens which is ideal for portrait photography and videography. The Canon RF 85mm F/1.4 VCM announced today provides an 85mm focal-length with a Full-Frame imaging circle that provides a flattering perspective. Its ultra-bright F/1.4 maximum aperture renders a smooth out-of-focus areas and a razor-thin depth-of-field.

Canon already has the RF 85mm F/1.2 USM which is equally suited for portrait photography. What the new F/1.4L VCM model brings is a VCM motor that performs better during video and an optical design that minimizes focus-breathing, a problem that becomes apparent when some lenses focus while filming.
