Indoor Crops

Here are sample crops from an indoor photograph taken at each ISO of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000. A crop from the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70

at the same ISO setting is shown next to each one of the FZ1000. Images below are all unmodified 100% crops from their respective cameras taken at the highest quality setting.

These crops help determine which ISO settings can be acceptably used. As noise increases, most digital cameras compensate with noise reduction which introduces softness. The result is that, while you can partly reduce noise at the expense of details, the maximum acceptable print size gets smaller as ISO is increased. The point at which a print become unacceptably noisy is a matter of personal taste.

Even at its native sensitity, there already a high amount of softness introduced by noise-reduction. Once can see it increase with ISO which is a sure sign of internal processing.

Note that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 applies Noise-Reduction proportionally to exposure-time which is why these crops are softer than some of the gallery images.
