Nikon Coolpix P510 Summary
Nikon Coolpix P510 Assessment
Superficially, the Nikon Coolpix P510 appears to be similar to several ultra-zooms, yet underneath it hold a good number of refinements. Of course, its ultra long 1000mm reach is headline-grabbing but what makes the P510 really compelling is its highly effective image stabilization, its improved interface including dual control-dials and dual zoom-controllers and rather consistent performance in most areas.
This digital camera provides a versatile feature set in a relatively compact size and manages to produce very usable results for common print sizes while packing a whopping 42X zoom in just over ½kg of camera. This makes it highly suitable for amateur travel photography and for general use as an outdoor camera. Once indoors focus speeds get downright sluggish. The only other major issue is a 2s delay at the start of video-capture which makes events easy to miss. That is unfortunate, since video-performance is otherwise great.
The bottom-line is that the Nikon Coolpix P510 is a fun and satisfying camera to use under the right conditions. Families traveling will appreciate having such an all-in-one camera to capture a wide variety of sights and subjects.
