Sony Launches High-Resolution Audio Wireless Microphone

Today, Sony Electronics launched a wireless microphone capable of recording high-resolution audio for digital cameras equipped with their proprietary Multi-Interface Hot-Shoe. This includes the every Mirrorless cameras that Sony launched in the last decade.

The new Sony ECM-W5 is a set of compact digital audio receivers and transmitters designed to deliver wireless audio with exceptional quality and stability. These audio devices transmit 32-bit floating-point audio between them. Without any obstructions between them, they can communicate up to 500m. Uniquely, each transmitter features 64GB of built-in memory to save a backup audio stream.

Audio is recorded at up to 96 kHz to capture incredible clarity and detail. With 24-bit at 96 kHz, the transmitter can store 60 hours of audio. Switching this to 32-bit float at 48 kHz extends this to 90 hours. A USB-C port on each transmitter allows them to be used with compatible smartphones and computers. They also feature Bluetooth LE to allow wireless audio monitoring using compatible Sony headphones. Some of those headphones can also be used as an extra wireless audio source. These professional microphones are weatherproof to. Each can operated for up to 11 hours from a full-charge.

The Sony ECM-W5 is being sold a a bundle which includes one receiver and two transmitters with a special case. Alternatively, each component can be bought separately. For every receiver, a maximum for four channels can be recorded by pairing additional transmitters.

Everything above is scheduled to be available last next month in North America. European availability and pricing as not been announced yet.
