This summer, Sony expanded their Digital Microphones offerings with two new models that take advantage of their proprietary Multi-Interface Hot-Shoe to deliver digital audio directly to the attached camera without using any analog cable in between. These new models extent digital audio recording to entry-level and mid-range users with correspondingly simple interfaces.

The new Sony ECM-B10 is a 3-in-1 digital microphone with a relatively compact form-factor. Using four high-performance microphone capsules, recording sensitivity can be enhanced from different directions. Users can easily switch between super-directional, unidirectional and omnidirectional capture.

Clarity is assured using digital noise suppression powered by a digital signal processor (DSP) directly inside the microphone. The body of the ECM_B10 is designed to absorb vibrations. Additionally, there are 3 levels of attenuation and a noise-cut feature plus analog audio level dial.

The new Sony ECM-B10 is already available and ready to ship for $250 USD or $320 CAD. Adorama stocks it and allows shipping to Canada and other international locations.

The newest addition is the incredibly compact Sony ECM-G1. This is also a microphone that attaches to the Sony Multi-Interface Hot shoe to deliver digital audio directly to the camera. Unlike the ECM-B10 above, the new ECM-G1 is heavily tuned to capture audio directly ahead. This is great for interviews and vlogging as it avoids collecting ambient noise.

This digital microphone weighs barely 35g, making it incredibly light. There are no controls on the microphone yet it still features a shock-absorbing base. Unusually, it also provides an analog audio input to chain a second microphone into the mix.

The Sony ECM-G1 is expected to be available next week for an afforable $150 USD or $190 CAD. Adorama is already accepting pre-orders for it here.
