Brightest Sony Full-Frame Lens Launched
News
2021.03.16
Sony unveiled this morning their brightest lens ever, among all Sony mounts. Most impressively, the new lens provides Full-Frame coverage on Sony E-mount mirrorless digital cameras. This new Sony FE 50mm F/1.2 GM is an ultra-bright premium prime lens that provides a normal 47° field-of-view. The latest lens is part of the most exclusive G-Master series of professional lenses.
The Sony FE 50mm F/1.2 GM offers a standard 50mm focal-lengh, joining 4 other 50mm prime lenses for Sony E-mount, three Full-Frame models and one limited to APS-C coverage only. These lenses cover an F/1.4 to F/2.8 maximum aperture-range with the brightest being the Sony FE Planar T* 50mm F/1.4 ZA. The new G-Master lens launched this morning manages to exceed its maximum brightness by a fraction of a stop while weighing exactly the same 778g. Their size is these lenses is also very similar with the F/1.2 measuring 87mm in diameter and 108mm long. Both accommodate 72mm filters at the front.
Sony is really pushing the limits of what the E-mount is thought capable of since this it has a relatively tight throat diameter for Full-Frame coverage. It manages this by using 3 Extreme Aspherical lens elements and improved nano-crystal coatings with uniform thickness to minimize flare. This heavy glass requires 4 XD linear motors to autofocus quickly and quietly. An 11-blade curved iris renders smooth bokeh in out-of-focus regions.
As all G-Master lenses, the FE 50mm F/1.2 GM is built to a high-standard with a fully weatherproof construction. The fixed lens barrel with internal focusing mechanism makes this lens exceptionally robust. A wide focus-ring with linear movement at the front provides fly-by-wire focusing. A dedicated aperture-ring towards the back can be declicked using a slider on the side of the lens. There is also an AF switch and programable button, similarly to other high-end Sony lenses.
The Sony FE 50mm F/1.2 GM is scheduled to arrive in May for $2000 USD or $2600 CAD. Our reputable affiliate B&H Photo is already accepting pre-orders.
