Sigma Launches First Mirrorless 10X Telephoto Zoom

Earlier today, Sigma Photo announced the first super-telephoto zoom lens designed exclusively for Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras, bringing one of their highly-unique DSLR lenses to the Sony E and Leica L mount.

The Sigma S 60-600mm F/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS delivers a 10X optical zoom with incredible reach, exceeding the famous 50-500mm lens that was dominated wildlife photography for years. Similarly, this new lens is guaranteed to trigger the same level of enthusiasm for this type of photography. Its quite dim maximum aperture remains the compromise necesary for this reach yet is not as restrictive now due to advances in image stabilization and new low-noise sensors.

This latest model is part of the Sigma Sport series of advanced specialty optics, although this is not a lens to use for Sport or Action photography since stabilization corrects for movements of the photographer not the subject. For wildlife, this lens will be exceptionally versatile. On top-of-the-line cameras with IBIS, it can take advantage of 8-stop of stability and on its own it can manage 6-stops at the long end which is ahead of most lenses. Toward the wider end, it can even compensate for 7-stops of shake.

New optics in the Sigma S 60-600mm F/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS allow it to focus down to 45cm which gives it one of the highest magnification of any telephoto lens, 0.41X at the wide end. The front of the lens accommodates a huge 105mm screw-on filter. Sigma packed quite a few controls on this lens, including a dual rotation and pull zoom mechanism, 3 customizable buttons, focus limiter, focus switch and image-stabilization control.

Sigma gave this lens a premium quality with an extensively weatherproof build to handle the outdoors. The 60-600mm weighs in almost 2½ kg which definitely makes it a heavy lens yet is lighter most other wildlife lenses. The Sigma S 60-600mm F/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS is schedule to ship next month for $2000 USD. This is an excellent value for such premium telephoto offering.
