Revoring Swift Funding Campaign Starts

Several weeks ago, we previewed the Revoring Swift modular magnetic system of filters. This morning marks the start of the campaign to fund this system on KickStarter. This is not a fully realized product and has not been tested yet but the Revoring Swift system looks promising and is built upon their previously successful retractable iris technology that mounts filters onto a varying thread-size without relying on any step-up rings.

Revoring Magnetic Adapter

Revoring Swift is a highly modular system comprised of stackable components which start with a Revoring adapter that uses the retractable iris to attach to the filter-thread that most lenses offer. One must choose among four sizes of the adapter, depending on the size of lenses used, to begin the stack: 46-62mm, 58-77mm, 67-82mm, 82-95mm. There is some overlap between all but the largest size to give leeway when selecting the width the system. Most are expected to fall within the 67-82mm range that covers the majority of lenses with Full-Frame coverage. APS-C DSLR and Mirorless systems could use the 58-77mm range to accept smaller lenses allowed by a cropped-sensor. The 46-62mm option matches more Micro Four-Thirds cameras.

Building the filter stack continues by adding a number of magnetic filters. The KickStarter campaign includes a substantial number of filters that drop-in seamlessly into the system:

  • Circular Polarizer, a Fixed Neutral-Density and 2 Variable ND Filters (1½-5 Stops and 6-9 Stops)
  • Creative Filters: Night, Mist, 6X Star plus Blue and Gold Streaks

Each Drop-In Filter slides into a special magnetic spacer so that it can be swapped without undoing the stack. Extra filters can snap onto the front of the stack, as long as no matte box or lens hood is attached. The launch introduces two Clip-On Filters: ND and Black Mist.

A Bridge Ring allows the mounting of a unique magnetic frame to place a rectangular filter within the stack. The frame is held by a magnetic ring with knobs to slide the rectangular filter along one axis. This essential when using a graduated filter whose effect is position-dependent. Revoring plans to launch 6 rectangular filters in the lineup: ND, Night, Hard-Graduated ND-Filter, Soft-Graduated ND-Filter, Revered Graduated ND Filter and Centered Graduated ND Filter. A magnetic filter frame is also planned for people to assemble rectangular filters with their own glass.

The front of the stack can be completed collapsible hood or something they call a matte box. That is more like a matte flap since there is not actual box around the frame, only a top panel to block out overhead lighting. The concept is similar yet will have no benefit for on-set light fixtures that are near the camera level. Omitting the 3 sides that would make this a matte box makes it a lot lighter though.

Different caps and a filter case were all announced as part of the KickStarter campaign for Revoring Swift. Given the modular nature of the system, they prepared some bundles at a discounted price for people to pledge funds. People can also select parts individually to compose their own package.

The target date for production of the Revovring Swift Modular System is September 2022. Remember, there is no guarantee that this target will be met or that the system will ever be produced, so choose carefully before pledging.
