Pentax Announces 645D Availability in Canada

The first digital medium format camera from Pentax will be available in Canada as early as November this year for a suggested retail price of $10500 CDN. A specially designed PENTAX-D FA 645 55mm F2.8 AL [IF] SDM AW lens will also be available along the 645D for $1250 CDN. Following the Pentax tradition of high compatibility, most film 645 lenses are compatible with the 645D.

The 645D is a unique medium format camera with a 40 megapixels sensor, equivalent to a 0.8X crop-factor (FLM) compared to a full-frame DSLR, promising ultra-high resolution and superb image quality. The 645D is the world's only medium format digital camera in a weather-sealed body, designed to withstand the elements and temperatures down to -10C. It is also the only such camera with a built-in dust-reduction system and two-axis digital level.

The ergonomics similarity between the Pentax 645D and their K-7 DSLR means superior handling and functionality designed to use the camera efficiently and at eye-level for most operations, something which has escaped other medium-format manufacturers. The 645D has full manual controls include the unique Hyper-Program mode, combined Aperture-Shutter-Priority mode and Sensitivity Priority mode. A newly designed 11-point AF system with 9 cross-type points near the center called SAFOX IX + is included to ensure fast and precise autofocus. One feature of the 645D not found in Pentax's DSLRs is the use of dual SDHC slots to accommodate the huge file sizes produced by a 40 megapixels sensor.
