Panasonic Unveils Full-Frame Travel-Zoom Lens

It was forever ago that Panasonic introduced the concept of Travel-Zoom Digital Camera to the world. These are compact cameras that sport a versatile zoom range to deliver a more portable all-in-one model. The concept was translated to lenses, initially for APS-C cameras as an upgrade to the typical kit lens. A few long-range lenses were made for Full-Frame yet they were all quite large and heavy, until today.

This morning Panasonic launched the world's first Travel-Zoom lens for Full-Frame digital cameras: The Lumix S 28-200mm F/4-7.1 Macro OIS. This is a Leica L-mount lens with Full-Frame coverage. This is a versatile lens that spans a huge zoom-range which it achieves in compact form by using a tiny aperture.

The focal-range of the Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm F/4-7.1 Macro OIS captures an angle-of-view between 12° and 75°. This can be used for virtually any photographic subjects with some limitations. Landscape, urban and street photography can all be conveniently photographed using this range. The dim aperture restricts both bokeh and quickly moving subjects, so travelers who also do portrait photography will prefer a brighter lens. On top of this, this 28-200mm lens has a 15cm minimum focus-distance, giving it a maximum 0.5X magnification.

Panasonic built this surprisingly compact zoom lens with minimal compromises, besides its maximum aperture. This lens is fully weatherproof and freezeproof to -10C. It incorporates a cooperative image-stabilization system that achieves up to 6½ stops of shake compensation when mounted on a camera with builtin stabilization. Alone, it manages 5-stops of stabilization.

The Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm F/4-7.1 Macro OIS is expected in April for $900 USD.
