Nikon Launches 5X Full-Frame Power-Zoom Lens

This morning Nikon launched the first Z-Mount Full-Frame Power-Zoom lens. This constant-aperture 5X optical zoom lens, which spans a highly-versatile focal-range, is designed primarily for videographers yet is made to be equally suitable for professional photography.

The new Nikkor Z 28-135mm F/4 PZ is a wide to short telephoto zoom lens with a constant F/4 maximum aperture throughout. This focal-range can capture a wide variety of subjects, from urban photography to close up portraits. It is the second Z-mount power-zoom in the lineup yet the first one to offer Full-Frame coverage. With a minimum focus distance of 34mm at wide-angle and 57cm at telephoto, it can reach a maximum magnification of 0.25X. Its focusing elements are designed to minimize focus-breathing so that it is not captured during video.

This lens is built for extensive use with a fully weatherproof design.

It offers fly-by-wire rings for focus and zoom, plus a control-ring. There are all highly customizable. Plus, an 11-speed zoom rocker provides power zoom with very smooth response. There are extra customizable buttons too. The front of the lens accepts huge 95mm filters.

Even though it can be used on a DX camera, this is a large and heavy lens that balances better with a heavier Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera body. It weighs 1.1kg and is about 18cm long.

Nikon expects to ship the Nikkor Z 28-135mm F/4 PZ this April for $2600 USD or $3400 CAD. Both Adorama and B&H Photo are already accepting preorders.
