Nikon Unveils New Extreme Zoom Digital Camera

CES 2020 officially started this morning is Vegas which many overnight press releases to give attendees plenty of new technologies to get excited about! Nikon just kicked things off with 4 new digital imaging products. This post covers their latest fixed-lens camera.

The new Nikon Coolpix P950 is an upgrade to the P900 reviewed here, a highly capable prosumer camera with an extreme 83X optical zoom, covering a range equivalent to 24-2000mm on Full-Frame at a fraction of the size and cost! The newer version slots itself above its predecessor and right below the flagship Nikon Coolpix P1000 which sports an even more spectacular 125X optical zoom, although it necessarily weighs and extra 400g to do so.

Sporting a newer 16 MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor that now captures 4K Ultra-HD video at 30 FPS, the P950 offers a faster imaging pipeline that provides it new features, including RAW shooting, Bulb exposure up to 60 seconds and a deeper continuous shooting buffer, up to 10 frames at 7 FPS. The optics in the lens remains the same yet it features an improved image-stabilization system which is effective to 5.5-stops over hand-holding.

Other improvements from the P900 include a much higher resolution 2.4 MP EVF with 100% coverage and an Eye-Start Sensor. There is an additional control-dial on the side of the lens barrel which brings their total to 3, a rarity even among prosumer cameras, which is bound to make the P950 more efficient. This dial serves as wired focus-ring in MF mode. The top of the camera now has a standard Hot-Shoe which is also compatible with a Dot-Sight Add-On sold-separately.

The Nikon Coolpix P950 is scheduled for availability next month at $800 USD or $1100 CAD. Adorama and B&H Photo are accepting pre-orders to ship as soon as inventory comes in. Credit cards are not charged until the product ship.
