Hasselblad 25mm XCD Prime Lens

Hasselblad recently announced a new lens for their XCD mirrorless platform of Medium-Format Digital Cameras. It joins 14 other lines that are all designed to capture a Medium-Format imaging circle while being relatively light weight. Indeed, Hasselblad has some of the lightest lenses with a larger than Full-Frame sensor.

The new Hasselblad XCD 25mm F/2.5 is the second widest and also second bright Hasselblad XCD lens. This lens captures a 110° field-of-view which is very wide, similar to a 20mm lens on a Full-Frame camera. Typically such focal-length is used for architecture, landscape and night sky photography. It is very useful to photograph urban environments.

XCD system do not have a shutter-mechanism. Instead they rely on a leaf-shutter within each lens. The 25mm F/2.5 lens supports shutter-speeds up to 1/4000s. The lens is 7.5cm in diameter and 10cm long which is quite compact for its Medium-Format coverage. It weighs 592g which is heavier than prime lenses for Full-Frame and just above average for Medium-Format.

This lens accepts relatively common 72mm screw-on filters and has a minimum focus-distance of 25cm, giving it a 0.17X magnification. It has a quiet internal AF system driven by a stepping motor. Hasselblad is launching the XCD 25mm F/2.5 for €4200 which is about $4500 USD. It is available immediate from the likes of Adorama and B&H Photo.
