Fujifilm Launches Power-Zoom and Extreme Telephoto Lenses

Right along with launch of the Fujifilm X-H2S today, the manufacturer introduced two new lenses for the X-mount platform of APS-C mirrorless digital cameras. They also update their lens roadmap to confirm dedication to the system, even if new products have been introduced at a slower pace than previous years.

Designed to be paired with the camera unveiled today is the Fujifilm Fujinon XF18-120mm F/4 LM PZ WR. This new lens spans an exceptionally long 18-120mm focal-range, equivalent to 27-180mm in Full-Frame terms even though it maintains a constant F/4 maximum aperture throughout. This lens comes with the latest optics from Fujifilm with special coatings to minimize flare. The front of the lens accepts standard 72mm screw-on filters and supports a petal-type lens hood.

The Fujifilm XF18-120mm F/4 LM PZ WR is completely driven electronically. Focus and aperture are linearly adjusted to produce gradual changes. New to the XF18-200mm F/4 is a Power-Zoom system that offers no less than 4-ways to control zoom! A traditional-looking zoom-ring changes focal-length using a fly-by-wire system and a rocker on the side of the lens does the same with smaller movements. Zoom can also be recalled using a custom button or adjusted by the camera. For cameras older than the X-H2S, this feature will be provided a later date via a firmware upgrade.

A parfocal optics formula ensures that focus never changes and the lens stays balanced while zooming. This complex system limits magnification to 0.2X. This lens weighs 460g which seems expected for this range and an APS-C coverage. Its body is weatherproof and freezeproof down to -10C.

The longest native X-mount lens was also released today. The new Fujifilm Fujinon XF150-600mm F/5.6-8R LM OIS WR is an extreme telephoto lens with 150-600mm focal-range, which equates to 225-900mm in Full-Frame terms! To achieve such reach, the XF150-600mm sports the dimmest aperture yet from Fujifilm, F/5.6 maximum near wide-angle and F/8 towards the long end. While the Fujifilm X-H2S sports the necesary 7-stop stabilization to work with such long focal-length, this lens comes with its own optical image-stabilization system that provides 5-stops of efficiency. A number of modern Fujifilm mirrorless are not stabilized, so this is essential for those.

Naturally, one expects this lens to be heavy and durable. It is fully weatherproof and freezeproof down to -10C, while it weighs 1.6kg which is lighter than extreme telephoto lenses, a consequence of its dim aperture. This adds new capabilities to the X-mount system that is solely developped by Fujifilm and served by only a handful of third-party manufacturers. By early next year, it will be joined by the upcoming XF30mm F/2.8R Macro, XF 56mm F/1.2 and XF8mm F/3.5.
