DxO Mark Rates Canon EOS R

DxO Mark is picking speed after recovering from bankruptcy protection with their third rating in as many weeks. Today, they published numbers for the Canon EOS R, the first Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera from its manufacturer.

The Canon EOS R is built around a 30 megapixels Dual-Pixel CMOS sensor with Phase-Detect Pixels at every pixel, a technology unique to Canon which makes autofocus transition incredibly smooth. This built-in Phase-Detect AF system is exposed as a 5655-Point system to the user, exceeding the focus-point selection mechanism of any camera on the market. The sensor boasts an ISO 100-40,000 sensitivity range, expandable to ISO 50-102,400. Paired with a Digic 8 processor, the EOS R can sustain 8 FPS continuous shooting for 100 JPEG images or 46 RAW files.

Along the DxO Mark scale, the Canon EOS R scores an 89. This is one of the highest scores achieved by a Canon camera, despite being aimed as a mid-range model with pricing to match. This does put it significantly behind competing models which could be a cost of using the Dual Pixel CMOS sensor which requires much more transistors than a conventional sensor.

Its score is broken down into a respectable 24.5 bit-depth, 13.5 EV of dynamic-range and High-ISO score of 2742. Where Canon falls most behind its peers is in terms of dynamic-range which is more than one full-stop being the competition. The High ISO scores is relatively better but nowhere near class-leading with some models scoring 1000 points over the EOS R.
