Canon Launches First Full-Frame Video Mirrorless
News
2026.05.13
The Digital Camera market heated up this morning with new product announcements from three major camera manufacturers. Canon followed Panasonic who announced their unique Lumix L10 earlier. Canon followed with one new camera and a lens that are perfectly matched to innovate in the video realm.
The new Canon EOS R6 V is video-centric Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera built around the RF mount. This camera uses a 32 megapixels Dual-Pixel AF CMOS sensor unique to Canon. The technology allows Canon to compute focus at every pixel which allowed Canon to lead video autofocus performance for years now.
This model is apologetically a camera designed for video. This approach allows Canon to cut back on features for photography in favor of new video capabilities. As such, the R6 V lacks any form a viewfinder, not provision to add one. It also lacks a mechanical shutter, which still has advantages for long exposures. It is also one of the few Full-Frame cameras that is not weatherproof since it has exhaust vents for a built-in fan to keep the camera from overheating while recording long videos.
Canon packed quite a few features in the EOS R6 V. Those include built-in image stabilization with 7½ stops of efficiency, which close to the IBIS performance of leading Full-Frame cameras. This camera records 7K video at 60 FPS, Cinema 4K and Ultra HD at 120 FPS and Full 1080p at 180 FPS. Photo speed is also fantastic with 40 FPS available at full-resolution. The reason this is less than the maximum frame-rate for video as that photos can be captured losslessly which requires a huge amount of bandwidth.
There are full manual controls on this camera but no Bulb mode, since it makes no sense for video. Still, it does support AEB, WB Bracketing and can control a flash, something that else that is not compatible with video. There is a 3" LCD with 1.6 megapixels mounted on a rotating hinge for framing. The unusual body of the Canon EOS R6 V has dual video recording triggers on opposite corners of the camera. One particular reason for this is that the R6 V supports vertical videos for the fist time on a Full-Frame Digital Camera.
Along the R6 V, the all-new Canon RF 20-50mm F/4L IS USM PZ lens was also launched. This short constant-aperture zoom lens is the first Canon Full-Frame model that features Power-Zoom. The 20mm wide end of the zoom captures an extremely wide field-of-view when capturing full-width video and can maintain a wide field-of-view even on cameras that record video from a crop of their sensor.
In the Canon announcement for this lens, they describe the lens as having both power and mechanical zoom. However, this is not strictly the case. Such lenses exist but this is not one of them. What Canon is calling Dual Zoom mode refers to two ways of controlling the power zoom. In standard Power-Zoom mode, the zoom ring sets the zoom using a spring-loaded response. This has the advantage of zooming at a continuous speed which is essential when zooming while recording video. In the mode called Manual Zoom, the zoom ring controls the focal-length electronically using a fly-by-wire system. This emulates the normal way of operating a zoom lens.
These new Canon offers are expected between June and July this year. The Canon EOS R6 V alone is set to be delivered earlier for $2500 USD. The Canon RF 20-50mm F/4L IS USM PZ will arrive a month later for $1400 USD. Canon also announced a bundle of the two for $3700 USD, giving a $200 rebate.
