Canon Takes EOS 1D X to Mark II

Canon just launched a new flagship DSLR which takes the convergence of photography and videography to the next level. The Canon 1D X Mark II introduces the first full-frame Dual-Pixel sensor which can measure phase-differences at every pixel to allow speedy and accurate Phase-Detect AF during Live-View and video capture.

The 20 megapixels CMOS sensor built for the 1D X Mark II has a wide ISO 100-51200 sensitivity range, expandable to 50-409600. Its fast read-out allows frame rates up to 16 FPS with the mirror raised, as in Live-View mode, or 14 FPS through the extra-large 0.76X magnification 100% coverage viewfinder.

The video capabilities of the 1D X Mark II are unmatched by any DSLR with Cinema 4K Ultra-HD (4096x2160) possible at a full 60 FPS. Stereo mini-jacks for input and output are available, as is a 1080p HDMI output port plus USB 3.0 and 330 Mbps Ethernet.

This professional DSLR is fully weather-sealed with dual control-dials on each grip. It offers for the first time on a Canon DSLR, a GPS and digital compass which record position, elevation and orientation. All this gives the 1D X Mark II a battery-life of 1210 shots-per-charge, despite not having a built-in flash.

Canon equipped their new flagship with dual asymmetric memory card slots which support Compact Flash Type 1 and CFast memory cards. Using the latter, it can shoot indefinitely JPEG images at 14 FPS or up to 170 RAW files.

The new Canon EOS 1D X Mark II is scheduled to ship in the second half of April for a retail price of $5999 USD. Adorama and B&H Photo are already accepting pre-orders.
