Canon Launches Powershot G1 X Mark III

Today Canon unveiled the newest member of its Premium Compact family. The completely redesigned Powershot G1 X Mark III is the first to sport an APS-C (1.6X-Crop) sensor and one of the rare such cameras with a zoom lens. This also marks the first time a fixed-lens camera is built around a Dual-Pixel CMOS sensor that allows Phase-Detect Autofocus at every pixel.

The Canon Powershot G1 X Mark III features a 24 megapixels CMOS sensor with broad sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600. This is likely the same sensor used in their most recent mirrorless cameras and several Canon DSLRs. The sensor is paired with a stabilized 3X optical zoom lens, equivalent to 24-72mm. It has a maximum F/2.8 aperture at the wide-end, diminishing to F/5.6 towards its telephoto end. Image-stabilization in the lens is good to 4-stops to compensate for a dim aperture on the long end of the zoom.

As a premium offering, the G1 X Mark III offers dual control-dials, a built-in 2.4 megapixels 0.39" OLED EVF with Eye-Start sensor and a hot-shoe within a weatherproof body. There is also a 3" touchscreen LCD mounted on a rotating hinge to facilitate shooting at odd angles. The body of this digital camera sports a high number of controls, while the camera is equipped with WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC connectivity.
