Canon EOS R3 Under Development

This morning Canon gave peek at their next flagship Mirrorless Digital Camera. The upcoming EOS R3 will take the new RF-platform beyond the already excellent Canon EOS R5 reviewed here, with an entirely new Stacked BSI-CMOS sensor of unspecified resolution. Its stacked design means that the R3 will be cable of significantly faster read-out than current Canon cameras to achieve greater continuous shooting speed and minimize rolling shutter while recording video.

The Canon EOS R3 aims to bring mirrorless performance closer to the top-of-the-line Canon EOS 1D X Mark III DSLR with a similar dual-grip body. This means much greater battery-power that generally comes with cameras that are designed to shoot continuously for extended periods. Although short on details, Canon emphasizes that this new mirrorless will feature a new high-performance Dual-Pixel AF system capable of tracking people, animals and birds.

A maximum continuous drive of 30 FPS with full Dual-Pixel AF and Auto-Exposure is expected to be achievable by the R3. An Eye-Tracking system will allow photographers to select the AF position simply by looking through the EVF at a subject! Tracking with Face-Detection will then follow subjects all over the frame.

This new Canon EOS R3 will be build to last with a fully weatherproof body and high-performance shutter. Price and availability will be announced at a later date.
